Causes of DIARRHEA

In most cases diarrhea is caused by gastrointestinal infections. The organisms causing these infections include viruses, bacteria, or parasites. Diarrhea is highly contagious and infection can spread rapidly from one child to another through contact. Infections spread rapidly through contaminated food and water, dirty hands, pets, direct contact with fecal matter (i.e., from dirty diapers or the toilet). Children are exposed to infections from contaminated objects such as toys, changing tables etc.

Common viral causes of diarrhea in infants are Rotavirus, enteroviruses, coxsackievirus etc. Common bacterial causes are E.coli, Salmonella enteritidis, Campylobacter bacteria, Shigella, Giardia parasite and Cryptosporidium parasite
